    I'm Ella Johnston, my practice is an ongoing investigation into mark-making, gesture, and the calligraphic line. I (mainly) draw, paint and create sculptural pieces.     I have been painting and exhibiting since 1998 and spent 12 years in Vietnam where I owned a gallery. I am so happy to be back in my native Yorkshire. My recent watercolour and acrylic works concern themes such as Origins, Belonging and the Joy of Life. I believe in the honesty of art and follow where my inspirations lead me. Inspirations include Hundertwasser, Doig, Hurvin Anderson and Hockney.

From hill farmers near her home in N Yorkshire to Icelandic puffin hunters, from Romanian nomadic shepherds to Lincolnshire flower farmers her projects reveal the fascinating intricacies of the dependencies between people, work and the land.
